The BBC news website has relaunched today, using Web Standards - the modern way of coding websites.
Well, it almost has.
The site design has been revamped and the coding is much better than it was, however they have still used some layout tables in the design, meaning it’s not totally standards compliant.
Also, they’ve opted for a bit of a div-heavy approach and haven’t used common techniques like using unordered lists (ULs) for navigation.
It’s certainly not perfect and there will be people who will no-doubt complain that the Beeb have done a half-hearted job.
However, this is a huge step forward and a big coup for the Web Standards movement. It should also improve the accessibility of the site for people with disabilities.
Now, if only the email standards movement could get to the same stage!!!
It’s a busy week here at Richard Quick Design.
We’ve launched 2 major websites today and have 2 more to launch later this week, one of which is getting an official launch at the Houses of Parliament.
Launched so far…
Michael Wiese Productions is a major publisher of film books, particularly those aimed at film students. If you’ve ever toyed with the idea of becoming a film director and gone into your local Borders to flick through the film section, chances are you’ve seen an MWP book.
KTS PLC supply software to companies in the City of London. Their clients include H.M. Treasury and Reuters.

Society for Storytelling are a national charity dedicated to promoting traditional oral storytelling. We redesigned their logo, corporate identity and website and are attending an official launch at the Houses of Parliament on Thursday, with guests including the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and the leader of the opposition, David Cameron.
County’s are a chocolate factory based in St. Ives. They make various types of chocolate and other confectionery and supply major supermarket chains such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco.
