How the hell are blind people using computers in the first place?

Good question, Daniel!

Blind people use computers an a variety of ways with the help of “assistive technology”.

Obviously, a blind person can’t see a computer screen, so they need another way to access the content.

For example, the can have the text on a computer screen read out to them, using a screen reader (in other words they listen to it), or they can have a braille “screen” which raises physical pins to spell out letters using the braille alphabet.

In most western counties, including the UK, USA and Australia, website owners are required, by law, to make sure disabled people can use their sites.

For example, blind people use special software called a screen reader, which reads the contents of a web page out to them. However, the software can only read a website that’s been well-coded (ideally using Web Standards).

British clothes shop River Island’s website is a stunning example of how NOT to do it.
