Web Design Book - Learning from other people’s mistakes (Logosauce sucks)

I’m addicted to a site called Logosauce at the moment. Not because it’s good. Because Logosauce sucks. Well, in fairness, it’s not the site that sucks, it’s the “designers” who use it.

Logosauce is a website which allows “designers” (I use the word loosely) to upload logos they’ve designed, including for the competitions the site runs.

Bad design sucks

However, it’s a great way to get a better understanding of what makes good design.

Some of the logos on the site are OK, but most are somewhere between awful and criminal.

Nothing new, but funny, none-the-less.

The 2012 London Olympics unveiled their new logo today .. and it’s truly awful.

Apparently the logo, which cost nearly half a million pounds ($1 million), is available in four colours, is based on the number 2012 (genius!) and is meant to appeal to “the youf”.

One branding expert I spoke to, who I won’t name, told me the logo, “looks like lots of old farts desperately trying to look young and hip and connect with the youth. I think it sucks!”

I couldn’t agree more.

I stumbled upon a website called “Can’t Cry a River” a few minutes ago. It’s an OK site, content-wise, but I was amazed at how hard it was to read the content.

The text is in a cursive (or handwriting) script and it’s dark purple on a dark green background (and vice-versa).

This makes it incredibly hard to read.

What is the difference between a good web designer and a p*ss poor one?

Well, lots of things. But one of the most important is attention to detail.

I recently came across a shockingly-bad example (which showed a total lack of attention to detail) on the My Space page for Sugababes, a British Pop-R&B group.
